African safari was always there in my mind. The wild animals and the tribal life seen in many Hollywood blockbusters have attracted me from my childhood days. However, it remained as a dream till last year when I got a chance to visit Ghana as a part of a delegation that has been entrusted with the task of studying the problems faced by the tribes in Africa. The organization, , which has been entrusted with the task, has formed five groups. Each group consisting of four to five people were sent to different countries in Africa. Our duty was to take first hand information about the life of various tribes and also to learn about different programs introduced by the government for the welfare of these tribes. Though there are many flights to Accra from different parts of the world, we had to negotiate tough flight deals to get the lowest possible rates for the tickets. Being a social organization, our sponsors will not spend much on tickets and related things. Luxury is totally out of our scheme of things and we had to adjust with the minimum facilities available for the budget sanctioned by the organization.
When I went to buy airline tickets, I strived to collect maximum information about Accra. The travel agent, who was a friend of mine, helped me to collect the details from internet. I made a list of places to be visited and a brief about the culture, food, climate etc also. Anyway, this preparation helped me a lot when we reached Ghana. Accra, the capital city of Ghana is the largest and richest city in that country. It has a mixture of British colonial architecture and the modern architecture. There is a presence of Chinese culture too. They have helped in building several structures in Accra. That is how the Chinese presence came in the architecture of the place. Being a tourist centre and as there are many cheap flights to Accra, a large number of visitors are coming every year.
Once we completed our task, we got almost four days to see the city. After being Independent, Kwame Nkrumah became the first president of Ghana. The plan of developments he followed was totally different from the British who were ruling the country so far. Instead of constructing living places for the rich and influential people, he preferred to construct structures that inspired his people. These monuments like Independent square and Organization of African Unity building etc are examples of this pride. Apart from the beaches and venues of performing arts, there are a lot of night clubs to entertain you. These could be the reasons for more and more people coming to Accra every year purchasing cheap tickets to Accra.
